The Women Lawyers Association (WLA) conducted a legal clinic at Kapanila Village, Traditional Authority Zulu in Mchinji on 14th November 2023. About 1500 people, consisting mainly of women and children, attended the clinic and were educated on the law in relation to gender-based violence, child marriages and the rights accorded to women and children when undergoing a divorce or when faced with the death of their spouse. WLA also had private one-on-one consultations with the women and girls from the area during which they gave advice and took up some cases for court action.
The event was graced by Amal Clooney, a renowned international human rights lawyer and co-founder of the Clooney Foundation for Justice (CFJ). Amal Clooney visited Malawi with Michelle Obama, and Melinda Gates who have united to end child marriages and uplift the girl child.
The clinic was organized as part of the project that WLA is implementing with the financial and technical support of the Clooney Foundation for Justice on the elimination of child marriages and gender-based violence. Under the project, WLA has identified hotspots of child marriages and is conducting legal clinics in remote areas country-wide in order to raise awareness and provide pro-bono legal support to women and children.
